Three positive things to do today to aid developing emotional intelligence
Whether a person’s professional responsibilities lay in management, sales, HR, or back office, developing emotional intelligence is the key to performance today and growth in the future. There are tell-tale clues that your people lack emotional intelligence, and salespeople without the necessary soft skills often suffer from the common pitfalls of sales. While the observant manager will be able to identify the need for developing emotional intelligence, executives require the tools to do so.
Helping people become self-aware and developing emotional intelligence
The first step in developing emotional intelligence is to increase self-awareness. With self-awareness comes the ability to control emotions, stop reflex reactions, and begin to take control of events and situations. The first step to helping others become self-aware is to learn how to increase your own self-awareness:
- Recognize the emotions that you experience
- Understand how these emotions make you feel
- Recognize the situations that affect your emotions
- Understand the relationship between your emotions and your consequent actions
Develop self-awareness first
For the majority of people, self-awareness is not a natural trait. However, it can be developed using a variety of emotional intelligence training activities. The importance is to be able to determine your emotional strengths and weaknesses, and then developing those areas accordingly.
In order to achieve this greater understanding of yourself, you might decide to rate your own strengths, or ask others for their feedback, or perhaps complete a formal emotional intelligence test (or, best of all, use all three methods).
Three things to do today to increase self-awareness
Try these three simple strategies to increase your self-awareness. Start them today, and continue for a couple of weeks. You’ll be surprised at how much you find out about your own emotional intelligence:
1. Keep a diary of your emotions
Write down in a diary what happened and how it made you feel. What actions did you take because of those feelings: this might be a response such as a verbal outburst, or a physical reaction such as an increased heart rate or sweating palms.
2. Write down how your responsibilities make you feel
Think about the roles you have in your life, at work and at home. You might be a parent, sibling, captain of a sports team, member of a community group, and so on. Now consider how each role makes you feel. Does it make you happy, frustrated, or nervous, for example? Think of as many roles and associated feelings as you can. Again, write tis down to solidify your thoughts.
3. Now, predict your emotional response
As you develop the above lists, you’ll be able to begin predicting how you will respond to different events and situations. Write down what you consider will be your response before the event. If you know how you are likely to react, you will be better able to control those reactions.
